World Post Day is celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland.

World Post Day aims to raise awareness of the role of the postal in the daily lives of people and businesses, as well as its contribution to global, social and economic development.

In 1969 AD at the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan, October 9 was chosen to be celebrated as World Post Day.

India became a member of the Universal Postal Union on July 1, 1876. India is the first country in Asia to take this membership.

On October 1, 1854, the Government of India established a separate Department for Posts.
